Question 1 medium

If a⃗ and b⃗ are two vectors such that ∣a⃗∣=2 and ∣b⃗∣=3, then the maximum value of 3∣(3a⃗+2b⃗)∣+4∣(3a⃗−2b⃗)∣ is :
  1. 30
  2. 36
  3. 60
  4. 72

Answer: C

Explanation. Let x⃗=3a⃗+2b⃗,y⃗=3a⃗−2b⃗. Then x⃗+y⃗=6a⃗,x⃗−y⃗=4b⃗. So ∣x⃗+y⃗∣=6∣a⃗∣=12,∣x⃗−y⃗∣=4∣b⃗∣=12. We need to maximize 3∣x⃗∣+4∣y⃗∣. By the parallelogram law, ∣x⃗∣2+∣y⃗∣2=∣x⃗+y⃗∣2+∣x⃗−y⃗∣22=122+1222=144. Thus ∣x⃗∣2+∣y⃗∣2=144. By Cauchy–Schwarz, (3∣x⃗∣+4∣y⃗∣)2≤(32+42)(∣x⃗∣2+∣y⃗∣2)=25⋅144=3600. Hence 3∣x⃗∣+4∣y⃗∣≤60. Equality occurs when ∣x⃗∣3=∣y⃗∣4 and the vectors x⃗,y⃗ are chosen appropriately, so the maximum is attainable. 60 **Answer: C) 60**

Question 2 easy

Let ∣a⃗∣=2,∣b⃗∣=3 and the angle between the vectors a⃗ and b⃗ be π4. Then ∣(a⃗+2b⃗)×(2a⃗−3b⃗)∣2 is equal to :
  1. 441
  2. 482
  3. 841
  4. 882

Answer: D

Explanation. (a⃗+2b⃗)×(2a⃗−3b⃗)=a⃗×(2a⃗)−a⃗×(3b⃗)+2b⃗×(2a⃗)−2b⃗×(3b⃗) Since a⃗×a⃗=0 and b⃗×b⃗=0, =−3(a⃗×b⃗)+4(b⃗×a⃗)=−3(a⃗×b⃗)−4(a⃗×b⃗)=−7(a⃗×b⃗) Thus, ∣(a⃗+2b⃗)×(2a⃗−3b⃗)∣=7∣a⃗×b⃗∣ Now, ∣a⃗×b⃗∣=∣a⃗∣∣b⃗∣sin⁡π4=2⋅3⋅22=32 So, ∣(a⃗+2b⃗)×(2a⃗−3b⃗)∣=7⋅32=212 Squaring, ∣(a⃗+2b⃗)×(2a⃗−3b⃗)∣2=(212)2=441⋅2=882 D
