Differential Equations for JEE Main & Advanced — formulas, what is asked, and traps

JEEGenie estimates about 4% of JEE Main marks come from Differential Equations. This page covers 19 formula entries, each with when to use it, what JEE asks and the traps. A common slip: Don't confuse order (highest derivative) with degree (power of highest derivative after removing radicals).

Key points to know

  • Differential Equation (DE). An equation involving derivatives of a dependent variable w.r.t. one or more independent variables.
  • Order and Degree of a DE. Order = highest derivative present. Degree = power of highest derivative after making DE polynomial in derivatives.
  • Solution of a DE. A function y=f(x) that satisfies the DE identically. General solution has arbitrary constants; particular solution has specific values.
  • Initial Value Problem (IVP). A DE with conditions specifying the value of the dependent variable and/or its derivatives at a point.
  • Wronskian and Linear Independence. For two functions y1,y2, Wronskian W=y1y2′−y2y1′. If W≠0, they are linearly independent.

Question 1 medium

If the curve y=f(x) passes through the point (1,e) and satisfies the differential equation dy=y(2+logex)dx, x>0, then f(e) is equal to :
  1. ee
  2. ee2
  3. e2e
  4. e2e

Answer: C

Explanation. dyy=(2+log⁡ex) dx Integrate both sides: ln⁡y=2x+∫log⁡ex dx ∫log⁡ex dx=xlog⁡ex−x So, ln⁡y=2x+xlog⁡ex−x+C=x+xlog⁡ex+C Given y(1)=e: ln⁡e=1+1⋅0+C⇒1=1+C⇒C=0 Thus, ln⁡y=x+xlog⁡ex=x(1+log⁡ex) y=ex(1+log⁡ex) Now find f(e): f(e)=ee(1+log⁡ee)=ee(1+1)=e2e C

Question 2 hard

Let g be a differentiable function such that ∫0xg(t)dt=x−∫0xtg⁡(t)dt,x≥0 and let y=y(x) satisfy the differential equation dydx−ytan⁡x=2(x+1)sec⁡xg(x),x∈[0,π2). If y(0)=0, then y(π3) is equal to
  1. 4π3
  2. 2π3
  3. 2π33
  4. 4π33

Answer: A

Explanation. Differentiate the given integral equation: g(x)=1−xg(x)⇒g(x)(1+x)=1⇒g(x)=11+x. The differential equation is dydx−ytan⁡x=2(x+1)sec⁡x⋅11+x=2sec⁡x. Integrating factor: μ=e−∫tan⁡x dx=eln⁡(cos⁡x)=cos⁡x. Multiply: ddx(ycos⁡x)=2sec⁡x⋅cos⁡x=2. Integrate: ycos⁡x=2x+C. y(0)=0⇒0=0+C⇒C=0. Thus y=2xcos⁡x. At x=π3: y(π3)=2⋅π312=4π3. The answer is option A.

Question 3 easy

The temperature T(t) of a body at time t=0 is 160∘F and it decreases continuously as per the differential equation dTdt=−K(T−80), where K is a positive constant. If T(15)=120∘F, then T(45) is equal to
  1. 90∘ F
  2. 85∘ F
  3. 80∘ F
  4. 95∘ F

Answer: A

Explanation. Newton's law of cooling gives the differential equation dTdt=−K(T−80) Separate variables: ∫dTT−80=−K∫dt ln⁡∣T−80∣=−Kt+C T−80=Ae−Kt At t=0, T=160: 160−80=A⇒A=80 So T(t)=80+80e−Kt At t=15, T=120: 120=80+80e−15K 40=80e−15K e−15K=12 Now at t=45: T(45)=80+80e−45K Since e−45K=(e−15K)3=(12)3=18, T(45)=80+80⋅18=80+10=90∘F The other options fail because they do not satisfy the exponential decay relation T−80∝e−Kt. Answer: (A)

Question 4 medium

Let y=y(x) be a solution of the differential equation (xcos⁡x)dy+(xysin⁡x+ycos⁡x−1)dx=0,0<x<π2. If π3y(π3)=3, then ∣π6y′′(π6)+2y′(π6)∣ is equal to ____________.

Answer: 2

Explanation. Rewrite the equation as xcos⁡x dydx+y(xsin⁡x+cos⁡x)=1  ⇒  dydx+y(tan⁡x+1x)=1xcos⁡x. **Integrating factor:** e∫(tan⁡x+1/x)dx=xsec⁡x. Then ddx(xysec⁡x)=xsec⁡x⋅1xcos⁡x=sec⁡2x  ⇒  xysec⁡x=tan⁡x+C. At x=π3: π3y(π3)=3 and sec⁡π3=2, so 23=3+C and C=3. Hence xy=sin⁡x+3cos⁡x. **Differentiate twice.** Let u=xy: u′=y+xy′=cos⁡x−3sin⁡x, u′′=2y′+xy′′=−sin⁡x−3cos⁡x. The required expression is xy′′+2y′=u′′. At x=π6: π6y′′ ⁣(π6)+2y′ ⁣(π6)=−12−3⋅32=−12−32=−2. Its absolute value is 2. Answer: 2

Question 5 hard

If y(x) is the solution of the differential equation x dy−(y2−4y) dx=0 for x>0, y(1)=2, and the slope of the curve y=y(x) is never zero, then the value of 10 y(2) is _____.

Answer: 8

Explanation. We have x dy−(y2−4y) dx=0  ⟹  dydx=y2−4yx. Separate variables: dyy(y−4)=dxx. Partial fractions: 1y(y−4)=14(1y−4−1y). So 14ln⁡∣y−4y∣=ln⁡x+C. Given y(1)=2: 14ln⁡∣2−42∣=14ln⁡1=0  ⟹  C=0. Thus ln⁡∣y−4y∣=4ln⁡x=ln⁡x4, so ∣y−4y∣=x4. Since slope is never zero, y≠0,4. At x=1, y=2, so y−4y=−1, hence the sign is negative: y−4y=−x4. Solve: y−4=−x4y  ⟹  y(1+x4)=4  ⟹  y=41+x4. Now y(2)=41+(2)4=41+4=45. Therefore 10 y(2)=10⋅45=8. 8
